The Spiritual Sense of Smell

1.      smell

2Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in   triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. 15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being   saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are the   smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?

Fragrance, aroma, an aroma pleasing to the lord, all deal with smell and smelling in the spirit, smelling with your spiritual senses.  Recognizing that there are five spiritual senses and then beginning the learning process of distinguishing the difference between them. Paul writes in

Hebrew 5:14  But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, even those who because of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

So exercising your spiritual senses is a part of maturing as a Christian. As you recognize the reality of the five spiritual senses you will begin to understand that God reveals Himself through them, but that the devil and his schemes will also be exposed by them.  2 Cor. 2:11(NIV) in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. Both good and evil will be revealed and exposed as you exercise the five spiritual senses…

Smell and taste are very close and often hard to distinguish. But, here are some examples of my experiences with smelling in the spirit. I have often smelled bread, like fresh baked bread. I take this to mean the Lord is pushing me into deeper fellowship and intimacy with Him. Right before an encounter with the Lord I often smell His fragrance, which tunes me in to being alert to His visitation. The fragrance of the Lord varies in aroma but is somehow easy to identify once you have smelled it.

The first time I recognized His fragrance was when I had a death experience and spoke face to face with the Lord Jesus Christ. Since that time I have encounter His fragrance multiple times. This smell is like a candy rose, mixed with cinnamon and other mixtures I still cannot identify. The fragrance of the Lord is very intoxicating, but hard to describe in words that we understand in this natural world. But when you smell the Lords fragrance it automatically draws you to Him. He purposely entices you to want more. When I was in the hospital His fragrance would precede his visitation, I would begin to experience His fragrance and within a short time He would manifest before me. Today I can easily recognize His presence when I smell His fragrance.

DEMONIC SMELLS, “oh the stench of it”:

Foul unclean spirits stink. For some examples, the Holy Spirit has also warned me with putrid demonic smells that give me insight into deliverance for the person standing before me. I have smelled burning rubber and other natural smells that have clued me in to what God is trying to say or the demonic real is trying to hide. I have smelled cigarette smoke as a word of knowledge. I have smelled wonderful cake smells that turned sour in my noise that I have identified as deception and deceit on a person.

Smelling in the spirit is an interesting practice and only one of many weapons or tools that God gives His children to use.
